Study: We Analyzed 64 Cypriot Accommodation Websites and 3 in 4 Speak Only One Language

After our nationwide study of Greek accommodation websites, we ran the exact same test in Cyprus: the same automated analysis with the same criteria, so the two markets can be compared fairly. To our knowledge, it is the first public technical analysis of its kind for Cypriot accommodations.
The methodology in brief
In August 2026 we collected 67 websites of small accommodations from 8 regions of Cyprus: Paphos and Coral Bay, Polis Chrysochous and Latchi, Limassol, Pissouri, Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras, the Troodos villages (including their agrotourism houses) and Nicosia. Own domains only, no Booking or Airbnb pages. 64 responded and were analyzed on their homepage: HTTPS, mobile viewport, meta data, structured data, Open Graph, languages, forms, analytics and time to first byte. Results are aggregate and anonymous. (Limitations: we checked homepage HTML, so features hidden on subpages or behind JavaScript may not have been captured. The 64 site sample is smaller than the Greek 588, so percentages carry a wider margin.)
Cyprus and Greece side by side
| Check | Cyprus (64 sites) | Greece (588 sites) |
|---|---|---|
| Page title | 100% | 99% |
| HTTPS | 95% | 96% |
| Mobile viewport | 94% | 91% |
| Meta description | 75% | 79% |
| Form on the homepage | 69% | 49% |
| Analytics | 66% | 59% |
| Open Graph tags | 69% | 57% |
| Structured data (schema.org) | 55% | 37% |
| Second language on homepage | 25% | 59% |
| Correct hreflang | 20% | 48% |
| Slow first response (over 1 sec.) | 48% | 42% |
Finding 1: 3 in 4 Cypriot sites speak only one language
The clearest finding of the study: only 25% offer a second language on the homepage, and just 20% declare it correctly to search engines with hreflang. Most Cypriot sites are built in English only, targeting the British market.
But the Cyprus audience is no longer just British: German, Israeli, Polish and Greek guests plus locals on staycation search and book online. Every missing language is an audience that goes back to Booking, where translation happens automatically and the 15 to 22% commission keeps running. The comparison with Greece is telling: there, 59% have a second language, more than double the share.
Finding 2: on the technical basics, Cyprus beats Greece
Two findings that positively surprised us:
- 69% have a form on the homepage, versus just 49% in Greece. Cypriot accommodations have understood that the guest must be able to send a request right where they are.
- 55% have structured data, versus 37% in Greece. More than half of Cypriot sites are readable by AI search, while in Greece it is barely 1 in 3.
The picture suggests a market that refreshed its websites more recently, likely driven by competition for the British online customer.
Finding 3: speed is the hidden cost
Nearly half the sites (48%) needed over 1 second just for the first server response, with the median at almost 1 second, worse than Greece. Before anything the guest sees even starts loading, half a second of their patience is already gone. Combined with the 6% of collected sites that were completely dead, the conclusion is familiar: paid for domains that do not perform.
The overall readiness score
Using the same three minimum criteria as the Greek study (homepage form, second language, mobile base), only 16% of Cypriot sites meet all three. The share is lower than the Greek 30%, and the reason is almost entirely linguistic: Cypriot sites have forms and a modern technical base, but they speak to a single audience.
What this means for your Cyprus property
The good news: the gap is specific and fixable. A bilingual or trilingual site with correct hreflang and fast loading immediately puts you in the 16% that is genuinely ready for direct bookings, ahead of the overwhelming majority of your competition.

Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest problem on Cypriot accommodation websites?+
Language. Only 25% of the 64 sites we analyzed offer a second language on the homepage and just 20% use correct hreflang declarations. An English only site loses the Greek speaking guest, and a Greek only site loses the international one. Speed comes next: nearly half the sites take over 1 second for the first server response.
Are Cypriot sites better or worse than Greek ones?+
A mixed picture. On the technical basics they are ahead: 69% with a homepage form versus 49% in Greece and 55% with structured data versus 37%. On language they are far behind: 25% with a second language versus 59% in Greece. And slightly worse on speed (48% slow versus 42%).
How was the study conducted?+
In August 2026 we collected 67 live websites of small accommodations from 8 regions of Cyprus, own domains only and no platform pages. 64 responded and were analyzed with the same automated homepage check we used in our Greek study of 588 sites, so the numbers are directly comparable. Results are published in aggregate and anonymously.
Why does a single language site cost bookings in Cyprus?+
The audience of Cypriot accommodations is multinational: British, German, Israeli, Polish and Greek guests plus locals on staycation. An English only site leaves out Greek speaking visitors and the local market, while a Greek only site is invisible to the international majority. A bilingual base with correct hreflang is the minimum.
